How to deal with a Cycling Incident

If you are involved in a cycling incident, it is essential to report all incidents and accidents, so we can react positively, e.g. amending routes to avoid know hazards or look at group sizes, etc. If someone has an accident and is injured, follow the next simple steps:

First Aid

• Use other members of the group to ensure that other road users are aware of the accident scene.

• Make sure that all injured parties are safe from further harm.

• If you suspect any injury to the spine, try your upmost not to move them.

• Find out if anyone in your group or at the scene has any first aid qualifications and follow their instructions. (Or use the St John Ambulance - First Aid for Cyclists app for advice on how to deal with common cycling injuries.)

• If you have any doubts about the extent of injuries, advise the casualty to go to the nearest A&E or Minor Injuries department. Or If you suspect a head injury, call an ambulance straight away.

• Contact the emergency services. Dial 999 or 112. Even if your network hasn’t got coverage, you still may be able to make a 999 call.

• Be prepared to give them details of your location, What happened and any information you’re able to provide on the casualty. If you are concerned about the condition of the casualty and no-one has any first aid knowledge, the emergency telephone operator will be able to talk you through what to do.

• Make the casualty as comfortable as possible until the emergency services arrive and ensure they are kept warm.

What Else to Do?

If there is a vehicle involved, and the driver has stopped or there were any witnesses, exchange details, including registration numbers.

• Gather any information or evidence from the accident scene. i.e. photographs

• Report the accident to the police as quickly as possible. Any delay is likely to lessen your case if a claim of prosecution is to be made.

Reporting to the Club

• Report the incident to the Club Welfare Officer within 24 hours. Providing as much of the following information as possible. Incident location

• What happened?

• Who was involved?

• What injuries / illnesses were suffered?

• What property was damaged?

• Any treatment given

• Any witnesses (Name & Contact details)

When a major Incident happens

• When an incident has occurred during a club activity which involves injury, death, illness or property damage sustained by any party, or where there was potential for injury, illness or damage, a British Cycling Incident Report Form must be completed by the club.

• The incident must be reported to the Club Welfare Officer (CWO)/Club by any person involved in the incident and if that is not possible, then someone from the group when it occurred needs to take responsibility for reporting to the CWO/Club.

For minor incidents

• We would like to hear of all incidents or accidents that happen on Mickey Cranks Cycling Club rides, even if you think they are small and may be inconsequential – they all matter. All incident reports will be treated confidentially and reviewed with the only aim of making riding safer.
